Topic: Resilience as a Global Conversation

Mary Symmonds is a retired United Nations Executive and International Economic and Social Development Practitioner. She has had a career of over 30 years first with the United Nations Secretariat and Subsequently the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In her leadership role, she brought bear her background in Political Science, International Affairs and Transformational Leadership to the management of multi-million dollar projects and development of programs that built capacities to help countries in the African Diaspora to build resilience.

Among others, in Ethiopia four regions were positively impacted under her leadership – in the North , Amhara and Tigray regions; in the the South focus was on the drought-affected areas of Kindo Koisha, Boloso Sore and Konso, which borders with Kenya; in the East the Somali region in the local government areas of Gode and Kelafo, and in the West, Gambella, which borders Sudan.

Ms. Symmonds also worked on developing with governments Disaster Prevention and Preparedness and Recovery and Reconstruction programs, spearheading multimillion dollar programs and projects that contributed  to recovery from the devastation of natural and man made disasters, as well as programs which contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals helping with strengthening governance, reducing poverty and managing the environment.

Ms Symmonds is also the founder of The Global Leadership Coalition which builds socially responsible, ethical, entrepreneurial leaders. She is one of the key co-creators of the Business Resilience Summit and featured in Dr. Vaughan’s book The Art of Resilience: Phoenixes Rising.
